Well done. This experience makes you wonder how many people have been convicted on false evidence and locked away. Looks like we have a ways to go to become a rationale society, and this is literally the tip of the ice burg.

There was a similar case in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the 1980s. The Wikipedia article is a reasonable summary.

The fundamental problem was the issue of clusters of deaths. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto deals with the sickest children in the whole province. Clusters happen. To my knowledge a Bayesian analysis of priors was never carried out.
